1973 Topps #613

1973 Topps Flashback:  The pickings are surprisingly slim when it comes to trying to find players within the 1973 Topps set with both a Phillies and an Expos/Nationals connection.  Featured today is the rookie card of the man who would catch Tug McGraw's pitch Willie Wilson to end the 1980 World Series and give the Phillies franchise their first title ever.  Bob Boone was drafted by the Phillies in 1969, and he'd make his Major League debut with the club on September 10, 1972.  He was the Phillies' starting catcher in 1973, and he'd wear the maroon tools of ignorance until departing for the California Angels following the 1981 season.

In 1,125 games with the Phillies, Boone hit .259 with 65 home runs.  He was a three-time All-Star with the club, winning the first two of his seven career Gold Gloves.  Boone was named the starting catcher on the franchise's Centennial Team in 1983 and he was inducted onto the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2005.

Boone (now 65) is currently the Assistant General Manager & Vice President of Player Development for the Nationals, and he's served in some capacity within the Nationals front office since 2005.
