2012 Topps #97 Jim Thome

Twins 11, Phillies 7
Game 63 - Tuesday Night, June 12th in Minneapolis
Record - 29-34, 5th Place, 9 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Twins took advantage of poor Phillies pitching, banging out 11 runs on 17 hits and dropping the Phils further into the cellar in the N.L. East.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won just one game in their last ten.  This is the latest in a season the Phillies have been five games under .500 since August 1, 2006, when they were 50-55.  The last time they were this many games out of first place was at the end of the 2006 season, when they finished 12 games behind the Mets.  And I'm grumpy.

What Went Wrong:  The offense actually looked good in this game.  Jimmy Rollins enjoyed a four-hit night and Jim Thome drove in two more runs.

The pitching on the other hand . . . Kyle Kendrick pitched just four innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.  The bullpen combo of Joe Savery and B.J. Rosenberg allowed five more Twins runs.

Featured Card:  If the Phillies keep losing, and if this is truly the end of the line for Thome as a Phillie,  I figure why not feature a few more Thome cards?  Thome received a Phillies card in Topps Series 2, but he's featured as a Twin in Series 1 on this card commemorating his 600th career home run.

Thome spent a season and a half with the Twins in 2010 and 2011, hitting 37 home runs in 179 games.  He received a nice ovation upon coming to the plate at Target Field yesterday in the first inning.
