Orioles 5, Phillies 4 (10 Innings)
Game 62 - Sunday Afternoon, June 10th in Baltimore
Record - 29-33, 5th Place, 8 games behind the Nationals
One Sentence Summary: Cliff Lee couldn't hold a three-run lead, the Phillies couldn't capitalize when they had runners in scoring position, and a costly tenth inning error led to the Orioles winning run.
What It Means: This is the first time since June 4, 2007 the Phillies have been eight games out of first place. They'll ponder their next move during an off-day in Minnesota today.
What Went Wrong: Ty Wigginton's error to open the tenth inning allowed the eventual winning run to reach base. It was his fourth error in four games at third as he fills in for the injured Gold Glover, Placido Polanco.
The Phillies had spotted Lee a 4-1 lead, but the winless pitcher allowed a three-run home run to Steve Tolleson in the fourth, erasing the lead.
The offense was 3 for 11 with runners in scoring position. And I got a little sun burned mowing the lawn.
Featured Card: The only good thing about yesterday's game was getting to see the Orioles new, all-white retro-style uniforms in action. The card featured here is from an era when those uniforms were first in use, back when both the Phillies and the Orioles were winning teams. The Orioles are trying to get to the postseason this year for the first time since 1997 and the Phillies are trying to avoid sitting home in October for the first time since 2007. Given both teams' play this weekend, I'd have to say the Orioles have a better chance of breaking their streak than the Phillies do of maintaining theirs.
"We've been losing some games recently, but at the same time, I'd like to win some games."

ReplyDeleteHey Ruben, in June 1972 GM Paul Owens replaced the manager with himself, to see first-hand "who could play and who couldn't"! (Just sayin')
