Curt Simmons Day - June 2nd at Egypt Memorial Park

1955 Bowman #64
I recently won this terrific 1955 Bowman Curt Simmons card from the same seller who brought the E90-1 American Carmel George McQuillan card into my collection.  By adding this card, I'm currently just seven cards shy of a complete 1955 Bowman Phillies team set.

Back in early January, I posted a few of Simmons' other Bowman cards, and I received an e-mail from reader Seth Hoderewki.  With Seth's permission, I'm reprinting the text of his e-mail here.  For more information about the upcoming Curt Simmons Day in Egypt, PA, please see the official website here.  There was also a nice article on the event in a recent edition of the Lehigh Valley Morning Call newspaper.  Seth's e-mail mentions a flyer and information on sponsorship for the event.  Please e-mail me if you're interested and I'll forward these documents along to you.

I am working with a group who is looking to honor Mr. Curt Simmons and the history of local baseball. My name is Seth Hoderewski. I represent Egypt Memorial Park, a nonprofit organization, outdoor park, and a great place for kids to play baseball. It is a small yet beautiful park about 10 minutes north of Allentown, Pa. You may know that it also happens to be the town that the legendary Philadelphia Phillie, Curt Simmons is from. On June 2nd, 1947 the Philadelphia Phillies brought their team to the little town of Egypt to woo the great Simmons to come and pitch for them. Simmons and a number of local high school all-stars played the Phillies in that game. These high schoolers tied the Phillies 4-4. Simmons struck out 11. It was an incredible event for our little town and launched the great career of Mr. Curt Simmons.

June 2nd 2012 will mark the 65th anniversary of that game, an incredible piece of baseball history that will probably never be done again in today’s baseball world. We are planning a huge event on June 2nd 2012 to not only recognize that incredible game, but Mr. Simmons himself. We are planning a parade, a ceremony rededicating the field to Mr. Simmons, and a huge all day celebration. The mayor of Whitehall is planning on proclaiming June 2nd as “Curt Simmons day". We are working with the Iron pigs and Phillies are involved at this point.

We are also reaching out to different groups and organizations about our plans to see if any of them might be able to add to the event with any contacts, information or really any type of support. Attached is a flyer for the event, a letter that describes the sponsorships a bit more, and our advertising levels for the program that we are putting together. Being a nonprofit, we certainly appreciate any type of assistance. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for your time!
Seth Hoderewski
