2011 Phillies Team Issue 2 #49 Vance Worley

Phillies 1, Marlins 0
Game 86 - Monday Night, July 4th in Miami

One Sentence Summary:  The pitching trio of Vance Worley, Michael Stutes and Antonio Bastardo combined to deliver an Independence Day shutout.

What It Means:  The Phillies improved to 54-32 and they currently have a 4 1/2 game lead over the Braves.  The Marlins fell further into the basement of the N.L. East, as they're now 15 1/2 games out.

What Went Right: Worley (4-1) continues to impress, pitching seven solid innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out six.  The Stutes-Bastardo tandem has to be the surprise of the season so far, as no one could have predicted the success both pitchers have had in the set-up man/closer roles.

The offense managed only six hits - two of which came from Domonic Brown.  The sole run was scored in the seventh when Brown scored from second on a Michael Martinez RBI-single.  It was a close play at the plate, with Brown appearing to just evade Marlins catcher John Buck's tag.

Featured Card:  I was a little torn with this selection.  As much as I wanted to feature a card for Martinez, solely because there may not be a good reason to do so for the rest of the season, Worley's performance was just too impressive to pass up.  This is his card from the "Series 2" team-issued set.
