1991 Score #94 John Kruk

Braves 5, Phillies 2
Game 33 - Sunday Night, May 8th in Philadelphia

One Sentence Summary:  Despite out-hitting the Braves, the Phillies couldn't string together key hits with their pink bats as they lost the game and the series.

What It Means:  The Phils are now 22-11 with a 2 game lead over the Marlins in the N.L. East.  The first "big" series of 2011 begins tonight as they open up a three-game series in Miami.

What Went Wrong:  Cole Hamels pitched well enough for the win, but the offense couldn't overcome the two home runs allowed by the righty.  He allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings of work while striking out nine.  Michael Stutes had his first shaky outing in the Majors, surrendering a two-run home run in the eighth to Eric Hinske.

Jair Jurrjens shut down the Phillies through 6 1/3 innings.  The Phils made some noise in the 8th, scoring a run, but pinch-hitter John Mayberry, Jr. struck out with runners at first and second to end the inning.  They also had a couple of runners on base in the ninth with one out, but both were left stranded.

Featured Card:  During ESPN's pre-game show, the Phillie Phanatic made an appearance with an authentic John Kruk #19 batting practice jersey.  One of the ESPN guys (I think Harold Reynolds), asked Kruk if that was even his number, to which Kruk replied, "Yeah, I wore that number one year."

Kruk started out with #11 when the Phillies acquired him from the Padres in June 1989.  At some point before the start of the 1990 season, he and back-up catcher Tom Nieto switched numbers with Kruk ending up with #19 and Nieto taking #11.  Kruk would wear #19 for just the 1990 season, before giving the number up to the newly acquired Jim Lindeman in 1991 and taking #28 for himself.  His stint as #28 was short-lived as he swapped it with Mitch Williams (reportedly for a case of beer) and took #29 when the Phillies acquired Wild Thing right before the beginning of the regular season in April 1991.  And now you know.

Other Stuff:  Both teams used pink bats and sported pink ribbons, cleats, wrist bands, necklaces and arm bands in honor of Mother's Day and to support breast cancer research.
