All-Star Game: 2009 (Busch Stadium, St. Louis)
Prior All-Star Game Performance: Unless Charlie went to an AL All-Star Game as a coach during his tenure as Indians' manager, this is his first visit to the Mid-Summer Classic.
How He Got to St. Louis: Charlie managed the 2008 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies.
2009 All-Star Game Notes: With the American League winning tonight, 4-3, Charlie became the first Phillies' manager ever to lose an All-Star Game. Previously, Eddie Sawyer (1951), Gene Mauch (1965), Dallas Green (1981), Paul Owens (1984) and Jim Fregosi (1994) had all won as managers of the National League All-Stars. (This factoid is direct from the official Phillies' Twitter page. If anyone can tell me why Gene Mauch was managing the 1965 National All-Stars, I'd greatly appreciate it).

Probably because Johnny Keane, the manager of the Cardinals in 1964 resigned and had taken over the Yankees in 1965. Since the Phillies finished second, that's likely why the job fell to Mauch.
ReplyDeleteThank you! You learn something new every day . . .
ReplyDeleteNo problem. It also happened in 1982 when Billy Martin of the A's managed the AL since Bob Lemon of the defending AL Champ Yankees had been fired.
