It was 20 years ago today . . . Mike Schmidt tearfully announced his retirement at a hastily called press conference in San Diego. 20 years already? Hard to believe Harry."Some 18 years ago, I left Dayton, Ohio, with two very bad knees and a dream to become a major-league baseball player," Mike said during the press conference. "I thank God the dream came true."
When I purchased the 1989 Fleer Update set (probably at the Ocean City card show), I was happy to see this tribute card included.

ReplyDelete20 years? Wow. I clearly remember this. We stuffed the ballot boxes for him in Detroit to get him elected to the All Star team.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very cool moment when Mike was introduced prior to the '89 All-Star Game and he received a lengthy standing ovation. It was nice to see him in the Phils' uni one more time.
