I feel your pain.<br /><br />As far as freeware goes, GIMP is among the most popular.<br /><br />http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/<br /><br />The learning curve is steeper than some, according to those who have tried it.<br /><br />As far as cheap + easy, I found this today:<br /><br />http://store.apple.com/us/product/TW392LL/A<br /><br />For $60 it looks like a friendly, scaled down Photoshop.
