Phillies Missing Links of the 1990s - #19 Robert Dodd

#57
Robert Wayne Dodd
Relief Pitcher

In need of another left-handed reliever after Yorkis Perez was placed on the disabled list, the Phillies recalled Robert Dodd from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons on May 27, 1998.  He'd make his major league debut a day later with a scoreless inning against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.  Pitching only three more times before being demoted back to Scranton, Dodd got his first and only big league win on June 16th when he pitched a scoreless ninth inning against the Pirates in a game the Phillies were trailing, 7-1.  The Phillies would miraculously score seven times in the bottom of the inning, capped by a walk-off, three-run home run from Mike Lieberthal.  Dodd was sent back down the following day when Perez was activated off the DL.

Dodd pitched two more full seasons in Reading and Scranton in 1999 and 2000, never getting the return call to the majors.  He wrapped up his professional career pitching three seasons (2001-2003) with the independent Somerset Patriots.

Ryan Howard - Final Chachi Cards & Complete Chachi Checklist

2017 Chachi Departures #19
2017 Chachi Fan Favorites #13
I posted a mid-season, updated listing of Phillies coming and goings a few days ago, and I wanted to dedicate an entire post to Ryan Howard.  Howard signed with the Braves organization on April 6th and reported to extended spring training.  He eventually reported to their Triple-A team in Gwinnett where he hit .184 (7 for 38) with a home run and five RBIs.  On May 8th, the Braves released him, seemingly ending his playing career.

I created two final Chachi cards for Howard.  One is the card he would have had if he'd returned to the Phillies, but updated to reflect his new (and strange) team, the Braves.  The other is a Fan Favorites card featuring Howard in the actual blue jersey of one of the Phillies' biggest rivals over the years.

I started the Chachi sets in 2005, which coincided with Howard's first full year in the Majors.  I haven't officially confirmed this, but I would have to think that Howard has appeared on more Chachi cards than any other player.  Each of his Chachi cards is linked below.

Phillies Missing Links of the 1990s - #5 Bob Wells

#56
Robert Lee Wells
Relief Pitcher

Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in August 1988, Bob Wells spent five seasons toiling in the minors before getting the call to the big leagues in May 1994.  John Kruk went on the disabled list on May 12th and Wells was recalled as the Phillies were in need of a bullpen arm.  He lasted the month with the club before being sent down in part to make room for the newly acquired Paul Quantrill on the club's roster.  Wells was waived a month later to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Fernando Valenzuela, and the Mariners picked him up.

Wells would find success as an American League reliever, bolstering the bullpens of the Mariners (1995-1998) and Twins (1999-2002) while leading the league in appearances (76) in 1999.

At the Ballpark:  On Wednesday afternoon, the first 20,000 fans will receive a Mariners reusable grocery bag, presented by MLB Network.

1982 Topps #52
1982 Topps Traded #31T
1982 Topps Appreciation:  There are three Mariners cards in the 1982 Topps set featuring players with Phillies connections.  I posted Shane Rawley's card when the Mariners came to Philadelphia in early May and the other two players are Larry Andersen and Jim Essian.

Andersen, one half of the current (and popular) Phillies radio broadcast team with Scott Franzke, pitched two seasons in Seattle (1981 and 1982) appearing in 81 games.  He'd join the Phillies bullpen from 1983 to 1986, and again from 1993 to 1994.

Essian came up with the Phillies, appearing in just 21 games with the club over three different seasons (1973-1975).  He appeared in 48 games for the Mariners in 1982, hitting .275 with three home runs.

Phillies Missing Links of the 1990s - #23 Torey Lovullo

#4
Salvatore Anthony Lovullo
Second Base-First Base

Currently in his first year as a major league manager for the Diamondbacks, Torey Lovullo's eight-year major league playing career came to a close with 17 uneventful games with the 1999 Phillies. An early September call-up along with Mike Grace and Cliff Politte, Lovullo had enjoyed a solid season with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, hitting .279 over 139 games.  Starting five games at second base and twice at first base for the Phillies, he hit .211 (8 for 38) with a pair of home runs and five RBIs.

Lovullo departed as a free agent following the season and played 29 games in 2000 with the Yakult Swallows in Japan before calling it a career.  He began his coaching career in 2001 with Cleveland as a minor league infield coach.  In the majors, he has served as the first base coach for the Blue Jays (2011-2012) and as the bench coach for the Red Sox (2013-2016).  Lovullo filled in as the interim manager for the Red Sox over the final seven weeks of the 2015 season when John Farrell was undergoing treatment for lymphoma.  His 2017 Diamondbacks are currently one of the best teams in the National League.

2017 Chachi Almost #11
With the symbolic half-way point of the season approaching, I wanted to take the opportunity to refresh the Phillies comings and goings listing and clear out some of the custom cards from my draft folder.

The four Chachi Almost cards at the top of the post are for players who won't be suiting up for the Phillies in 2017.  Jesmuel Valentin had his season cut short with surgery to repair his separated shoulder.  Pitchers Dalier Hinojosa and Mario Hollands were released from their minor league contracts while Taylor Featherston was traded to the Rays.  I also wanted to pay a final Phillies Room tribute to Joely Rodriguez who was the first (of many?) casualties from the 2017 Phillies bullpen as the lefty was designated for assignment and ultimately traded to the Rangers.

1962 Topps #352 Frank Sullivan

Diamondbacks 2, Phillies 1 (11)
Game 74 - Sunday Afternoon, June 25th in Phoenix
Record - 24-50, 5th place, 20 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies couldn't support Jeremy Hellickson and his solid outing, losing in extras to the Diamondbacks, 2-1.

What It Means:  Per Todd Zolecki via Twitter - The Phillies have lost in extra innings four times in the the last eight days and six times in the last 14 days.  It's been a bad season and a demoralizing two weeks.

What Happened:  Edubray Ramos' nightmare season continued as he allowed the Diamondbacks to score their winning run in the 11th.  He now owns a 5.52 ERA and a 0-7 record.  Hellickson had thrown six innings, allowing a run on three hits.  The team's sole run came from a Howie Kendrick pinch-hit single in the seventh. The offense was 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position.

Featured Card:  With a record of 24-50 through 74 games, this is the third season in franchise history the Phillies have tallied 50 losses through their first 75 games.  They achieved the feat in 1961 and 1997, seasons in which they finished with 107 and 98 losses respectively.  Here's a vintage card of the 1961 team's closer, Frank Sullivan, who went 3-16 that season.

The Phillies Room will be on auto-pilot for a short while as we go on our summer hiatus.  Keep your heads up, everyone!

Record - 24-49, 5th place, 20 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Ben Lively couldn't single-handedly defeat the Diamondbacks as the much better team beat the struggling team, 9-2.

What It Means:  The modest two-game win streak is over.

What Happened:  The only offense generated by the Phillies came courtesy of Lively, who hit his first big league home run in the fourth with a runner on base.  The rest of the line-up managed five singles.

Featured Card:  At 25 years and 111 days old, Lively became the youngest Phillies pitcher to hit a home run since Jeff Juden in 1995.  Also of note is that Lively is the seventh Phillies pitcher to homer as a rookie, with Tyler Green being the most recent on August 23, 1995.

Phillies Debuts:  Hoby Milner became the eighth player to make his major league debut with the Phillies this season, and 16th player overall making his Phillies debut.

16.  Hoby Milner (lhp) - Entered in relief in the sixth inning for Lively, allowed an inherited runner to score and a run of his own in one inning pitched.  His run scored when he loaded the bases and then hit David Peralta with a pitch.  Milner faced one batter in the seventh, striking out Jake Lamb.

2017 Chachi In Action #4 Mark Leiter, Jr.

Phillies 6, Diamondbacks 1
Game 72 - Late Friday Night, June 23rd in Phoenix
Record - 24-48, 5th place, 19 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  In his first major league start, Mark Leiter, Jr. pitched six scoreless innings and helped the Phillies to a 6-1 victory.

What It Means:  The Phillies have a two-game winning streak!

What Happened:  The game was a lot closer than the final score indicates, as the Phillies held a narrow 1-0 lead heading into the eighth inning.  Maikel Franco (9) hit a solo home run to give the Phillies a little cushion and then the offense added four more runs in the ninth.  The big hit was Tommy Joseph's (12) two-run home run (into the pool at Chase Field) to give the Phillies a 6-1 lead.

Featured Card:  Leiter earns an In Action card for his efforts.  He allowed just three hits while striking out five.

Transaction:  To make room for Leiter on the roster, reliever Casey Fien was placed on the 10-day disabled list.
